City Lights
by Alison Giordano

Dave woke to the sound of his communicator ring. He glanced at the clock by his bed. 6:45 in the morning. What could anyone possibly want, he thought. He pressed the answer button and shortly after, Krissy popped up on his screen, and before he could even say hello, she took it upon herself to reprimand him for the night before.

"So I suppose you thought what you did last night was smart," she said matter of factly. "The plan wasn't to let Ben get away, it was to have him find out Sarcops' hideout location. In letting Ben get away, you may as well have exposed us all. He'll go right to Sarcops and tell her in a second what we're up to." Krissy had her arms crossed and was glaring down at Dave, but he could see the worry in her eyes.

"Krissy, listen, you have nothing to worry about. Ben's not saying a word until he has to."

"What makes you so sure about that? Don't you think he knows how we were using him? He's gonna tell Sarcops everything, and then our plans to stop the ENA will be ruined."

"I chipped him."

"You WHAT?!"

"I chipped him."

"Dave! Do you realize how serious that is? No one is supposed to be chipped, we don't even know how those things work yet!"

"Relax, Krissy. I've got Dr. Muller watching him carefully. It'll be fine."

"Wait'll Boss hears about this. Man are you in for it."

"Krissy, Boss told me to do it." Krissy's face went blank. Dave immediately regretted telling her that. He knew what Ben had meant to her.

"Well then," she said softly. "I suppose that explains everything."

"Look, there is nothing anyone could have done. You didn't fail him. He knew what he was getting into when he started in this. You're in for life whether or not you like it. We all made that decision, made our pledge to the code and swore to serve one purpose for the rest of our lives. Ben was going to leave, and it was only a matter of time before he did. He was pushed by greed and selfishness. No matter what you could have done, nothing would have stopped him."

Krissy tried to hide her fear and dissapointment and turned away. She wanted to believe Dave, but she just couldn't get the guilt to go away. She feared for her own life now. She and Ben had been close, and she couldn't help but worry that she would forever be associated with him. What if Boss tells Dave to chip me, too? Krissy turned back to Dave.

"Listen, Dave, I would never break the code. I would never try to leave or expose any of us. I just wanted to make sure that you knew that."

"I do," Dave reassured her. "Don't worry, Kris, you're safe. How about a little tennis before we head to work, huh?"

* * * Dave sat in his office at Skylight headquarters pretending to do work. He just couldn't get his mind off what he had done to Ben. It was something that had to be done, he knew, but no matter how much faith he had in these new chips, he couldn't help but worry about the safety of the agents, and more importantly, of their mission. It was imperative that they stop ENA from succeeding in downloading all power sources in the city. They were inches from doing so, and if they did, Sarcops would have access to whatever power she needed to gain control over everything in the city, including Skylight. The agency had been successful in hiding their true function by disguising themselves as a manufacturer of skycars, but if Sarcops ever gained complete power, they would be found out and destroyed. Sarcops had been responsible for many wrongdoings in the city, but she was always stopped, although she never knew exactly by whom. If the acency were to be uncovered, she would surely show no mercy.

"Agent Banks!" Dave heard Boss' voice down the hall, but he couldn't get himself to move. That tennis match had left him a bit sore. Krissy sure knew how to hit that ball.

"Agent Banks!" Boss stormed into Dave's office, and Dave nearly jumped out of his chair.

"Yes, sir?" Dave played it cool, but he knew what was coming.

"Who authorized you to chip Agent Yarr? Do you realize the danger you have put him in?" Boss looked furious. Dave squirmed in his seat a little, but stood his ground.

"Sir, I don't think you understand what is at stake here - "You presume to tell me what is at stake! I am your commander, you do as I say, and I don't recall me saying it was okay to chip Agent Yarr!" Dave could tell he was in big trouble now. Why can't you ever just keep your mouth shut and your hands in your own business, he thought. But it was his business. He knew that this was the only way to keep themselves alive and the city safe. The reason Dave chipped Ben wasn't just to make sure he wouldn't talk, but to be able to control him in every way when the time came. These newly developed chips gave the agency control over the entire person if they wanted. The whole plan was to let Ben to get into Sarcops' hideout and then from there, the agency could use Ben to defeat Sarcops from the inside out. It was a great plan, at least Dave thought it was. Dr.Muller was fully supportive as well. Dave had thought Boss would understand what he was trying to do and praise him for his good-thinking. Krissy on the other hand, Dave knew wouldn't give her support, and the last thing he needed was for his partner to be against him. If Boss was in agreement, at least Dave could have left the blame on him.

"Dave, I have no choice but to suspend you. You can get your things and go to your condo immediately. I also don't want you going out into the city. Stay in your Skylight condo until I say otherwise." Dave was stunned. He took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down.

"Boss, I don't think that's a good idea."

"Agent Banks, at this point in time your input on what is or isn't a good idea means nothing to me. We will go ahead with the original plan to attack as soon as we can locate the hideout. Although maybe it won't be so hard now that Agent Yarr is chipped and will most likely be going there. We will attack once we locate his position as being in the hideout." Dave was so frustrated he could rip Boss' head off. Why couldn't he see that this was not a good plan? It was impossible to overtake the ENA from the outside. The whole reason why it was impossible to locate the hideout from the outside was because it was completely hidden. Besides that, even with a good estimation of its location, it was well known by all agents that there was some kind of unearthly force that protected the lair from all outside attacks. Despite all of this, Boss was sure that Skylight's new weapon, the Destrinal Missile was all powerful and could cut through any force field. Scientists had been working on it with Masters and said to have perfected its force penetration power. Dave still had his doubts. His plan to attack from the inside using Ben's body was ideal. He can suspend me all he wantsv, Dave thought, but he can't stop me from doing this. Dave left the office building and walked across to the condo complex, planning his own attack.

Within three hours of his official suspension, Dave had managed to get himself, Krissy, and Dr.Muller set up in one of the empty labs in the basement of the office building. Dr.Muller connected his computers and soon had the status on Ben.

"His signal is pretty faint and irregular. I presume it's due to the force field. I'm positive he's in." Dr.Muller soon had Ben's exact location determined and had prepared to take control over his body. "Whenever you're ready, Agent Banks." Dave nodded and turned to Krissy.

"Krissy, I just wanted to tell you I'm sorry I wasn't honest with you. You gotta understand I had no choice. This has to be done and this is the way to do it. You still mad?" Dave hoped she would get past her love for Ben and see that the fate of the city lay in their hands at that very moment.

"I get it, Dave. I'm glad you were strong enough to do it, because I know I never could have myself. Let's do away with this thing." Krissy had a look of determination in her eyes and Dave admired her for it. She really is strong, he thought to himself.

The two got their gear together and prepared to meet whatever managed to get out of the hideout before Ben could destroy it. Suddenly the lights flickered.

"It's happening," Dave said. "Dr. Muller, can you tell what's going on?"

"It seems that Sarcops has begun the download. Within an hour all power will be drained."

"As soon as we leave, give me power over Ben and we'll take the ENA down." Dave picked up the control pad and headed to the skycar. Krissy was already in the driver's seat, staring in front of her.

"This is it, isn't it?" she said. "He's not coming back is he?" Dave gave her a sympathetic look and was about to answer, but the lights flickered again.

"We've got to do this now," Dr. Muller said. "Before we lose too much power." Dave hopped in the skycar, and they took off. Within seconds Dave's control pad was activated. As they got closer, Ben's signal became stronger, and Dave was finally able to get him to stop the download. He pushed some more buttons and, using Ben's skill from his agent training, managed to defeat most of the occupants of the hideout. By this time, Dave and Krissy were facing the mountains.

"It's in there somewhere," Krissy said. Just as she finished, the two could see a group of pods emerge from somewhere inside the mountain.

"Attack pods," Dave said. Krissy shot at them but it wasn't long before they heard the roar of Skylight's Fighter Birds as they flew overhead, destroying all the pods. Soon enough, Boss' voice came from Krissy and Dave's radio.

"Agent Banks and Agent Markars, what do you think you're doing? I thought I told you to stay put, Banks." Before the two had time to answer, they saw the Destrinal Missile headed straight for the mountains. They held their breath, unsure of what to expect. The missile got closer and closer to the mountain, and then an earth-shattering explosion sounded, but there wasn't a dent in the mountain. Dave knew it was time. He programmed the chip in Ben to self-destruct, and within seconds, the mountain was no more than a big pile of rubble.

Boss' voice came through again, and he told Krissy and Dave to head back to headquarters immediately. On the way back, Dave saw tears in Krissy's eyes. Ben was gone, but he would be on her mind for a while, Dave thought.

Once back at Skylight, news of Sarcops' escape surfaced. She had gotten away in an escape pod before Ben's chip could self-destruct. Despite that, Boss praised Dave and Krissy and promoted them to mission control. He admitted that he had been wrong and apologized to Dave.

"All that matters is that we terminated the ENA. At least, until Sarcops gets her act together again," Dave said.

"Well, until then, why don't we celebrate?" said Boss. "Drinks on me!" When they went out that night, he city lights shone brighter than ever. Another victory for Dave and the Skylight agency.
